About Emma
Educator at Body Literate Birth
I'm a birth educator (provisional certification with BirthWorks International) who is passionate about women's health and body literacy. Over a decade ago, I was looking for non-medical options to improve my menstrual cycles, and I came across Dr. Lara Briden's Period Repair Manual. This book was my first step in realizing that most women - including myself at the time - don't know how their bodies work, and women's bodies are actually pretty amazing! Years later, I deep-dived into childbirth, and again, I realized that pregnancy and birth are a natural, healthy function of women's bodies. Women's bodies are designed for pregnancy and birth, and when their bodies are trusted and honored, complications become a lot more rare.
I also specialize in health literacy. Through this work, I've collaborated with and advised medical providers and institutions, nonprofits, and pharmaceutical companies on how to communicate clearly with their patients and how to foster patient experiences that empower people to take an active role in their health. I've also developed hundreds of educational materials that clearly explain medical information for those receiving care.
Additionally, I have a Masters of Fine Arts in documentary filmmaking. I've created films and videos for PBS, Smithsonian, Pearson Education, and more.
